"I wanted to express my sincerest thanks to your team—the pacers of the 5:15 mark. I couldn't find the 5 hr-mark pacers so I joined Genevieve and two other gentlemen pacers (didn't get their names though; Gen might remember me, I introduced myself to her as "Lara from the Philippines."). Gen and the two other gentlemen were very encouraging along the course. I set modest expectations for myself--a 5-hr or even 5:10 finish. I finished the race with a chip time of 4 hrs 59 minutes and 41 seconds. I am over the moon about this finish! I think because I started "easy" I was able to save my strength and pull away by the 30km mark and finish strong. I hope to join the marathon in 2010. Having pacers in a race is very helpful and I hope your team will still be there. Best regards, Lara Parpan Editor-in-Chief Women's Health magazine Summit Media Philippines "

"I just want to say thank you to Steven Ho and Angela Cheong. They may not have met me, but I did see them during the race. I tried to find them before the start of the half-marathon (I was at the race venue since 5am as my sister and brother were doing the full marathon), but I couldn't spot your pacers. I wanted to finish the half-marathon in 2hours 30min. (FYI, I did the half-marathon in Dec last year and my time was terrible: 2hours 51 minutes.) So I went ahead and ran as soon as the gun went off. Eventually I spotted Steven somewhere near the half-m turning point on Mountbatten Road. He was wearing a red and white top and had a gray (or was it silver) balloon attached to him. I ran alongside him for a bit then I realised that if I was able to catch up with him, and I didn't feel that tired at all, then maybe I could go a bit faster than him, so I did. I couldn't believe it when several minutes later on Nicoll Highway (the Concourse building was nearby), I saw Angela. I knew it was her because she had blonde highlights in her hair. She was wearing a lime green top with the Team Fatbird bib and the 2:30 time on it. I was going to say "hi" and ask if I could run with her, then I thought that she might be waiting for others who had been pacing with her earlier on. Then I figured that if she was going at that pace, and I could match it, I knew then that I could run a little bit faster. There must've been 5km to go. The bottomline is, i'm glad I saw them because then I was reassured that I was running at a good pace, conserving my energy. Steven and Angela were a great way to figure out just how much harder I could push myself. I'm happy to say I finished the race in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 51 seconds (net time), roughly 5 minutes below what I had wanted to achieve. Thank you so much Team Fatbird! Best regards, Scho Parpan Richardson "

DreamRunner wrote on 09/12/2009 20:09:05 PM:

"(in response to why many Pacers were not spotted with balloons)... it was rather unfortunate that due to some communications breakdown, the security stopped our Pacers' balloons from the 4:30h timing group onwards, probably thinking we were doing it for marketing/branding. In spite of the pleas by our Pacers and other fellow runners, the instructions were carried through. The organizers later clarified that they had instructed that the Team FatBird Marathon Pacers' balloons were to be allowed for clear identification by the Pacees. They will probably look into this at the post-mortem to improve for future marathons. However, the Pacers did not allow that small blip to affect our performances, and eventually brought rather large groups to their target finish times. We are still receiving congratulatory notes and compliments. That explains to a certain extent why runners could not spot the Pacers, especially those in the timing groups of 4:30h-6:00h. We hope this did not cause too much duress to the runners who were trying to find us. Let us learn from all these lessons, to improve and do even better in SCSM10. Team FatBird Marathon Pacers, Follow Our Pace, Win Your Race! "

I have great respect to all pacers for doing this voluntarily for the benefit of our running community. Great job fatbirds! If I'm in town next yr, perhaps I'll join as a pacer =) "

But still, thanks for your good job. Hope next year I have more time for training, and join you guys a few weekend runs: ) "

"After getting cramps on my thigh and calf muscles at 36km, I resigned to walk most of the remaining 6km. Then at the Esplanade Drive, I met the 4:30 pacers who were urging their pacees to go for sub 4:30. That gave me a new objective and I ran the rest of the way to clock just under 4:30. So I want to say Thank You! to the 4:30 pacers, (expecially DO, who shouted loudest), for the inspiration. THANK YOU!! "

I wanna thank one of the guys who was in the 5:15 team for egging me on when I was walking along singapore flyer (nearing the end) and that made me pick up to run again instead of walking. He also threw me words of encouragement to maintain the pace, so that made me happy and more determined to push my limits. They were also shouting to other runners to keep going and press on to finish the last 2km. It was very motivating!"

"Hi Team FatBird, Really hope everyone pulled up in good shape after yesterday and there are no major injuries to report. I just wanted to drop you a note to congratulate you and your team on the amazing efforts of all the pacers yesterday but also over the running season. I have never met such a wonderful and enthusiastic group of runners and I am so glad to have found you guys two weeks before race day and I only regret it wasn’t sooner! My running partner pulled out of the marathon two weeks ago and I can truly say there is no way I would have gotten through it if it weren’t for the 4:30 pace group and the wider Team FatBird. Over the last two weeks of practise runs and even during yesterday’s run I learnt soooooo much and particularly through repeated questions to David and Nigel I picked up invaluable running knowledge and vital marathon tips. THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH to all Fatbirders but particularly David, Nigel and the rest of group 4:30. Completing a marathon was one of my life’s goals and I am forever indebt to you guys for pulling me through it. I truly thought I would do one marathon and that was that- however if how much I enjoyed yesterday is any indication- I think I will be back to do it again! Take care and cannot wait to join you in 2010! Cheers Kristina Knight, Account Director "

"I've never been a fan of running until Jan 2009 when I realised that I needed to improve my stamina for golf. I started running and increasing my milege slowly for a few months and got hooked on running. My overall fitness improved and I was eager to join 10km runs and half marathons to see how I would fare in my training. However, I couldnt break past the 10KM mark because running alone was tough and mentally challenging. I was on the verge of resigning to my fate that I wasnt able to beat the 10KM mark and that was when someone mentioned Team Fatbird to me. The rest was history. I could never have completed my first half without TFB and now working towards my first full marathon! Their passion knows no boundaries and binds people of all walks of lives together with a single mission - Keep on running. TFB, Thanks for your relentless efforts in sharing running tips and constant encouragement! "
